Oh yeah...we won some and lost some, but overall...we did very well! Dave Ramsey approved...we saved up 3 months of entertainment money! This was our first time at the races with incredible seats. They were so close we fed the horses and could feel the heels galloping on the track!
One of the turf races. There were about 13 races throughout the day...so we enjoyed every minute of it!
I was trying not to spend a lot of money on my wardrobe...so I took a black hat I already had and added some Lillies (the Oaks' flower) to make it more sophisticated, wore the pearls Andrew got me as a wedding gift and well...had a little dress drama. I coordinated the entire trip, telling everyone what to bring and not to forget...we get 80 miles outside of Brandenburg...OMG!!!! I FORGOT MY DRESS!! I thought I was going to, at last, have to spend money...I ended up using a dress I had stored to give away (had it since high school!).
Everyone looked soooo good!! Mom made her hat as well...she used Granny's old hat (our great-grandmother's) and added some feathers and flowers. We all saved money by wearing what we already had.
Whenever you go to Louisville, KY...everyone has to visit Lynn's Paradise Cafe...the Kentucky Hot Brown...is Bobby Flay's favorite off the menu. I debated for a long while since I knew it was drowned in cheese...but mom and Ashley dared me, so I had to give it a try! I have to admit the not-so-healthy plate was pretty delicious, and they have scrumptious fried green tomatoes!
The best part about the place...is role playing and checking out all the gags! Mom even bought teeth molds for ice and put them in all the dentists and dentist-to-be's drinks for the Derby party.
Kentucky is known for some great Bourbon...all because we sit on a bunch of limestone. I'm not a big bourbon fan, however there are quite a few distilleries in the most beautiful parts of Kentucky - Versailles. The distilleries are old and the Woodford Reserve Distillery was one of the firsts in the U.S. The buildings date back to the 1800's. So cool! FYI...you get to sample the bourbon in the end...apparently I needed an educational seminar on how to sample bourbon. They give them to you in shot glasses, so my immediate thought was...drink it all at once. I turned around and saw that everyone else was still sipping on their samples...then it hit me...my face quickly scrunched and my esophagus was on FIRE!! I saw ice cubes and water (which is supposed to be used to dilute the bourbon) and grabbed a handfull. Everyone was talking about how smooth it was and I of course didn't agree. Andrew and the group got wide-eyed and giggled. Andrew also reminded me that it's been aging for over 7 years!! Yup...I felt every one of them! Then Ashley asked, "is there something about your college days I don't know about?!" Oh man...my ride home was spent burping (not sexy as mentioned in a previous post) and begging Ashley for some pretzels. One sample of bourbon is plenty for me!
